Ever since the great mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras ‘invented’ the idea of strings and notes by hanging stones from animal gut-strings, varying length and weight, the Western Music has been dominated by the I, IV, V Chords (ie. the 1st, 4th and 5th note of the DoReMi scale) in any combination. Pythagoras found that some notes will spontaneously resonate when other notes are played, a scientific discovery of chords. The 5th note will resonate when the 1st note is played and the 1st note will resonate when the 4th note is played, giving us an almost natural combination of these I, IV, V Chords.
Numerous hits and tunes have been written using these chords in many different combinations:
I - IV - V - I talkin’ blues style like ‘A Boy Named Sue’, ‘Talkin’ World War III Blues’
I - IV - V - IV gives us anything from ‘La Bamba’ to ‘Wild Thing’
IV - I - V - V gives us hits like ‘Gloria’
V - IV - I - V used in themes like ‘Sympatie For The Devil’ and ‘Rosemary’
I - I - I - I - IV - IV - I - I - V - IV - I - V is the classic 12 bar blues scheme used in R&R, Rockabilly Blues and Country
I - IV - I - V - I - IV - V - I another quite famous progression
